Adopt a Highway

Adopt a Highway

The State of Texas initiated the Adopt-a-Highway project twenty-four years ago as a way of organizing community minded individuals to organize and pick up roadside trash from their adopted sections of Texas Highways. The program has been a statewide success. The City of Weston Lakes adopted the pre-determined section of FM 1093 running approximately .5 mile to the east of the entrance to Weston Lakes and approximately 1.5 miles to the west of the entrance. We have a two year adoption agreement with The State of Texas and have agreed to clean up our section eight times over the two year period.
The Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is rooted in the Adopt-a-Highway program. Originally called the Great Texas Trash-Off, the event began in 1986 as a call to action to refrain from littering on one designated day. In 1987, the Trash-Off event was expanded to include litter pickup because research has shown that people are less likely to litter when the roadside is clean. From these humble origins, the event has evolved and continues to enjoy increasing success.

The City of Weston Lakes is pleased to announce our commitment and participation with the Texas Trash-Off event on Saturday, April 10, 2010. This is a great way to volunteer your time and support your community. All interested volunteers should call the City’s Office at (281) 533-0907 or email Denis DeLuca at delucadenis@gmail.com. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. outside of the front gates at the Sales Center the morning of the Trash-Off!

The City Council has agreed to facilitate the request for a community volunteer effort to eliminate the accumulation of trash and litter along FM 1093 in front of Weston Lakes.  The City has no legal responsibility for litter control along the FM1093 right of way; however the trash and litter is unsightly and many of our citizens asked to establish a volunteer program under the auspices of TxDOT on a quarterly basis to pick up the unsightly trash along the FM 1093 right of way.

Alderman Denis DeLuca has agreed to be the City point of contact and the organizer of the trash pickup days.  He has contacted TxDOT and the 2 mile stretch of FM 1093 fronting Weston Lakes has been approved.  The Adopt a Highway sign will be placed at the start points on each side of FM103 and will reflect that the road is being tended by the Citizens of Weston Lakes.  Alderman DeLuca will coordinate date pickups, one in each quarter; volunteers, and  pickup of the collected trash by TxDOT.  The volunteers are required to wear safety vests and receive a safety briefing before beginning the trash pickup effort.  Trash is to be placed in bags provided by TxDOT and placed in a designated place for pick up by TxDOT personnel.  Announcement of pickup days and times will be published on in the Weston Lakes Newsletter and on the home page of the City Web Site.

Individuals desiring to volunteer should call the City Offices at (281) 533-0907.
